The district of Karangasem in the east is one of the least populated and less touristy areas of the island of Bali.
Geographically, the district has one of the most Bali's famous attractions … the sacred Gunung Agung and the whole area around this famous mountain is one of the most beautiful I've seen.
You can view mountain peaks early in the morning almost every corner of the island. When you stand over it you can even see Mount Rinjani in Lombok Island, City of Lion King Singaraja in the north and south of Sanur.
The Gunung Agung in Bali is located on religion the same as the Olympus for the Greeks. This is the place where the gods live and the Balinese refer to him as the "navel of the world." I always dream with his head toward the mountain and the feet toward the sea, where demons and evil spirits alive.
Because the Balinese believe that the gods and good spirits live in the mountains that have erected the most important temple in the slopes of Gunung Agung. It is called Pura (Temple) Besakih and belongs to all Hindus on the island of Bali.
Once every 100 years there is a ceremony called Eka Desa Rudra where the Balinese restore the balance between man and nature in the Pura Besakih. The last time that this ceremony was held on 8 March 1963 in fact 16 years too soon … some say that President Sukarno, held a meeting on the mountain and wanted to impress a conference of travel agents international ceremony.
9 days after the mountain exploded, killing thousands of vast areas of Bali and destroyed from the earth, about 100,000 people lost their homes and their source of income. The entire island was covered in ash and crops were wiped out everywhere. The strange thing is that the temple was not destroyed by the lava, but only covered with black ash.
Since the eruption of some of Bali, even had to transmigrate to other islands of Indonesia and back again. Since that the Balinese are very superstitious believed that Sukarno was punished by losing all his powers two years later.
The ceremony took place at another time and this in 1979 and now the Balinese sacrificed an elephant, a tiger, eagle and other animals 77 to honor the gods and restore harmony. The ceremony was a great success and became the mother temple Besakih.
The temple is constantly enlarged by various communities, such as royal families, the Family Brahman (the highest cast in Bali) and all the other cast on the island of Bali. The three most important temples are spread over a distance of 1 km and is called Pura Agung Penaten (dedicated to Sanghang Widhi Wasa) Pure Kiduling Kreteg (dedicated to Brahma) and Pura Batu Medog (dedicated to Vishnu).
If you want to make a visit to the Gunung Agung and Pura Besakih is the best time to leave early before for all large tour buses arrive. It's perfect when you are there at 8am and have clear ideas about the rice terraces, mountains and sea … is really worth.
Attempting to return before 12 am, when clouds gather near the top of the mountain and you can not do any of the photos more impressive.
